Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenol belonging to the stilbene family, which is commonly found in the skin of red grapes, in wine, and in some fruits. The grapevine (Vitis vinifera) produces resveratrol. It is also found in Polygonum Cuspidatum, which grows in Asia, whose roots contain a higher percentage of resveratrol.



Resveratrol's notoriety stems from the "French paradox" – a term used to describe the observation that despite the traditional French diet being high in saturated fats, the French have a low incidence of cardiovascular disease compared to other countries with similar diets.
