Fish Oil – A Trusted Ally for Children's Immunity Through the Changing Seasons

Changing seasons and temperature swings often „shake up“ our immune system, causing fatigue, colds, and greater susceptibility to viruses. The youngest among us are especially affected during this period - beyond a strong immune system, it's important for them to have the energy and concentration to face the daily challenges of school and kindergarten.

A growing child's body is more fragile, and it's important not to overlook the topic of strengthening their health. So they can enjoy their time playing with friends and absorbing new knowledge in class, they need to get the substances their body requires. Naturally extracted fish oil comes to the rescue in this mission. Beyond its undeniable benefits for physical health, it also supports brain function, improves concentration, and provides the energy little ones need.

What is fish oil and what does it help with?

Natural fish oil is a concentrated source of omega-3 fatty acids , in particular EPA and DHA (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid), and it also contains vitamin A and D3. EPA supports heart function and lowers triglycerides in the blood, while DHA supports good eyesight and brain function, making up about 25% of its fatty tissue. The benefits of taking it are many, but here's how it supports health through the coming cold months.

Supports lung function

The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil have a proven anti-inflammatory effect. When the body is under viral attack or fighting a cold, it becomes more prone to inflammation, which is often seen in the lungs. Thanks to docosahexaenoic acid and vitamin D3, fish oil becomes a powerful ally for little ones with a weakened immune system. As we head into the season of school absences due to illness, it's important to pay attention to them and strengthen them, so they don't fall behind on schoolwork.

According to a two-stage study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine this year, people with higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids have better lung function. Studying genetic factors, the scientists, led by Bonnie Patchen - a member of the Cassano research team at Cornell University, conclude that daily intake would give us a head start against inflammatory processes in the body.

Helping with depressive thoughts

Bad weather in autumn and winter can contribute to feelings of drowsiness, intrusive thoughts, and even sadness. Research into the link between depressive states and omega-3 fatty acids is still in its early stages. Even so, a number of clinical studies show signs of improvement in patients who took EPA and DHA - with greater effectiveness observed from eicosapentaenoic acid intake. One property of these fatty acids is how easily they pass through the brain's cell membrane and interact with the part of the brain responsible for mood. Beyond concentration, it's extremely important for children to be happy and to enjoy their carefree moments.

A Harvard University study shows that daily intake of omega-3 fatty acids, together with vitamin D, in early childhood could help prevent possible mental instability later in life.

Support for ADHD

Lack of concentration and impulsive behavior - these are part of the signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, better known as ADHD. Increasingly common, this disorder can make it harder for a child to retain information and concentrate in class. The condition can lead to disorganization, unconscious overexcitement, and even aggression. The symptoms are difficult to tie directly to ADHD, and diagnosis, at least for now, requires a range of tests and observations. For their part, the medications given to patients with the disorder can be quite harsh and come with side effects.

Fortunately, there's a proven link between naturally extracted fish oil and a reduction in symptoms in children. A 2012 study published in the American medical journal PLOS ONE, gives encouraging results - within four months, a group of children who took EPA and DHA through supplements showed noticeable progress in their ability to read with focus.

Reduces dry eyes

We're now in allergy season, with damp air - a recipe for heavy, dry eyes. Combined with the strain of staring at digital screens, we can unknowingly develop dry eye syndrome. The problem may not show up right away, but it's best not to ignore it.

We've all heard that eating fish supports eyesight, and it's good to eat seafood every few days. As already mentioned, fish oil reduces inflammation in the body, including inflammation of the eyelids. With regular intake, it can dramatically reduce that “heaviness” in the eyes and dryness of the eyeballs. Combined with its anti-inflammatory action, the oil helps regulate the meibomian glands, which play an important role in tear formation.

How do you get it?

Omega-3 fatty acids are not synthesized in our bodies, so we need to get them through the right foods or by taking fish oil as a supplement. Foods rich in EPA and DHA, include fattier fish such as cod, salmon, sea bass, herring, and trout. As a supplement, it's available on the market in various forms - liquid or capsules. When fish oil is taken as a supplement, it delivers concentrated amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, while also building a good daily habit in children.
