How to Take Care of Your Skin in Winter?

You love winter, but your skin reacts to the cold, wind, and dirty air? To take care of it, it's important to know what it needs, why, and how it copes with unfavorable conditions.

Skin 101

The skin is the largest human organ by surface area. It has several important functions, two of which are directly related to winter. The first is protection. The outermost layer of the skin - the stratum corneum - protects the body from damaging agents, including the sun's UV rays, and from water loss. If this layer is removed, water loss can increase 10-20 times, according to experts. It has a pH level of 5-6.5, which creates a barrier against the penetration and growth of microorganisms in the body.

The lipids in the stratum corneum prevent water loss from the skin. Without them, painful dryness and even sores can result. Ultraviolet (UV) sunlight, even in winter, can speed up the skin's aging process and make it more prone to drying out.

The second function is related to the skin's heat exchange. The skin takes part in thermoregulation in several ways - through the evaporation of moisture and sweat from its surface, through heat radiation, and through heat conduction. Subcutaneous fat tissue protects the body from heat loss.

In the middle layer of the skin - the dermis - elastin and type I and III collagen are produced, along with other proteins. When collagen is lacking, the production of hyaluronic acid in the dermis also decreases, and hyaluronic acid is tied to the skin's water content and elasticity.

In short, in winter our skin protects us from the cold, the winter sun, and pollution, by maintaining the hydration that gives us health and beauty.

Hydration and rich-textured creams

Veronika Nacheva, founder of the RONIQUE Health and Beauty Center, advises us to go for creams with hydrating ingredients in winter, and, if needed, with an anti-aging formula. This period is well suited for treatments that renew the skin. Peels and treatments with retinol and vitamin C prepare the skin for spring.

Beyond that, it's important to keep using sunscreen daily, especially if you're skiing or spending time in the mountains. The sun's UV rays aren't scared off by the cold and can seriously damage the skin by limiting its collagen production.

More tips for healthy, strong skin in winter.

- Foods and supplements rich in collagen improve the skin's barrier function by increasing its water content. A protein-rich diet, backed by plenty of vegetables and fruit, helps keep your skin healthy and vital through winter;

- During the cold months, wear scarves and gloves made from natural materials, which protect the skin from the cold! Natural materials protect sensitive skin;

- Your skin is the first to notice when you're hydrating. So drink water and fluids, and use moisturizing products.

- Hot showers and long, hot baths dry out the skin. Lukewarm water helps it recover.
